HOMS Bands Conclude Another Award-Winning Year!
May 25, 2009

HOMS Spring Concerts concludes another award-winning year!

PALM CITY, FLORIDA - On behalf of the Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS) Band Boosters, please accept our sincere appreciation for your support! The Beginning Band performed their final concert on Monday, May 18, 2009, and the Concert/Intermediate, Jazz and Symphonic Bands performed their final concert of the season on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hidden Oaks Gymnasium under the direction of Mr. Allen Gilbert. On May 20th, the award-winning Jazz Band Ambassadors opened the concert with five [5] selections such as; In the Midnight Hour, and Smooth Operator, and their "theme" song, "September." There were several featured soloists, and the crowd enjoyed their lively, upbeat arrangements. As that the Jazz Band took home “Gold” from the recent Heritage Festival in Orlando, and was invited to compete in their prestigious Elite Performance series, (which might make them eligible for Carnegie Hall); we look forward to hearing more from this wonderful group of young people next school year.

Immediately following the Jazz Band were six [6] selections performed by the Intermediate and Concert Bands combined, again, under the direction of Mr. Allen Gilbert. Their performance included a moving arrangement of the Star Wars by John Williams. The Concert Band has also earned superior awards from the Florida Band Masters Association, and we could not be more proud of these talented young men and women.

To conclude the evening's performances, the Symphonic Band performed six [6] selections, including the two [2] arrangements that were performed at the Music Performance Assessment (MPA) {the musical equivalent to the FCAT} and at the Heritage Festival in Orlando. Both arrangements earned the students a superior (A+) rating, at the Heritage Festival. This year, the HOMS Band and audience were afforded a rare treat, special guest conductor, D. Rob Roadman, from Martin County High School (MCHS) conducted the Symphonic Band students in a rousing rendition of Orpheus Overture by Offenbach/Conley. Mr. D. Rob Roadman has served as the Director of Martin County High School Bands in Stuart, Florida since 1979. During that time, the MCHS Band has gained a reputation as one of the premiere bands in the southeastern United States. Prior to his tenure at MCHS, Roadman taught in the public schools of Alachua County. Roadman is also the past President of the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA), and holds membership in a number of professional and fraternal music organizations. In November 2009, Roadman will be inducted into the FBA Hall of Fame. The parents of the HOMS Band students wish to extend their sincere appreciation to Mr. Roadman for his time, talent, and dedication toward assisting the HOMS students with this performance. Roadman had regularly given of his time in the preceding weeks to come to HOMS to work with our students prior to this concert.

Immediately following the Symphonic Band performance, Mr. Gilbert presented the student awards, to conclude this portion of the program was the presentation of the 2008/2009, "John Philip Sousa Award" to Miss Mikaela Shannon, and the 2008/2009 “Louis Armstrong Outstanding Jazz Musician Award” to percussionist, Mr. Anthony J. Ferrara, II. Immediately following the concert, there was a reception in the cafeteria, where Mr. Allen Gilbert was presented with a token of appreciation from all of the students and parents from all of the above mentioned Bands. Refreshments were provided in part by Publix Supermarkets, Martin Downs Boulevard in Palm City. Ms. Jeannie Ferrara, Band Booster President 2006-2009, was also presented with a much appreciated “farewell” token. Ms. Ferrara is honored to be included in the list of those who have been elected to serve the HOMS Band children and their families, as Mr. Gilbert’s Band Booster President. Ferrara looks forward to the opportunity to support the MCHS Band programs during the 2009/2010 school year, and will remain the HOMS Chorus Publicity Director. Our special thanks to all the servers for the evening: Julie McKinney, Debby Brackett, Donna Vojcsik, Dawn Hatton, and emcee’s Kristina Hester and Helen Harvey…..and so many others that helped make the evening possible.

We could not complete such a wonderful year without extending another "Thank you!" to the over 194 youth and adult volunteers that helped make this such a successful year for the Bands. Hidden Oaks Middle School volunteers have graciously given over 2, 500 hours of their time just this past School year to support Mr. Gilbert and his efforts.
