HOMS Bands Conclude Another Award-Winning Year!
May 25, 2009 HOMS Spring Concerts concludes another award-winning year! PALM CITY, FLORIDA - On behalf of the Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS) Band Boosters, please accept our sincere appreciation for your support! The Beginning Band performed their final concert on Monday, May 18, 2009, and the Concert/Intermediate, Jazz and Symphonic Bands performed their final concert of the season on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hidden Oaks Gymnasium under the direction of Mr. Allen Gilbert. On May 20th, the award-winning Jazz Band Ambassadors opened the concert with five [5] selections such as; In the Midnight Hour, and Smooth Operator, and their "theme" song, "September." There were several featured soloists, and the crowd enjoyed their lively, upbeat arrangements. As that the Jazz Band took home “Gold” from the recent Heritage Festival in Orlando, and was invited to compete in their prestigious Elite Performance series, (which might make them eligible for Carnegie Hall); we look forward to hearing more from this wonderful group of young people next school year. Immediately following the Jazz Band were six [6] selections performed by the Intermediate and Concert Bands combined, again, under the direction of Mr. Allen Gilbert. Their performance included a moving arrangement of the Star Wars by John Williams. The Concert Band has also earned superior awards from the Florida Band Masters Association, and we could not be more proud of these talented young men and women. To conclude the evening's performances, the Symphonic Band performed six [6] selections, including the two [2] arrangements that were performed at the Music Performance Assessment (MPA) {the musical equivalent to the FCAT} and at the Heritage Festival in Orlando. Both arrangements earned the students a superior (A+) rating, at the Heritage Festival. This year, the HOMS Band and audience were afforded a rare treat, special guest conductor, D. Rob Roadman, from Martin County High School (MCHS) conducted the Symphonic Band students in a rousing rendition of Orpheus Overture by Offenbach/Conley. Mr. D. Rob Roadman has served as the Director of Martin County High School Bands in Stuart, Florida since 1979. During that time, the MCHS Band has gained a reputation as one of the premiere bands in the southeastern United States. Prior to his tenure at MCHS, Roadman taught in the public schools of Alachua County. Roadman is also the past President of the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA), and holds membership in a number of professional and fraternal music organizations. In November 2009, Roadman will be inducted into the FBA Hall of Fame. The parents of the HOMS Band students wish to extend their sincere appreciation to Mr. Roadman for his time, talent, and dedication toward assisting the HOMS students with this performance. Roadman had regularly given of his time in the preceding weeks to come to HOMS to work with our students prior to this concert. Immediately following the Symphonic Band performance, Mr. Gilbert presented the student awards, to conclude this portion of the program was the presentation of the 2008/2009, "John Philip Sousa Award" to Miss Mikaela Shannon, and the 2008/2009 “Louis Armstrong Outstanding Jazz Musician Award” to percussionist, Mr. Anthony J. Ferrara, II. Immediately following the concert, there was a reception in the cafeteria, where Mr. Allen Gilbert was presented with a token of appreciation from all of the students and parents from all of the above mentioned Bands. Refreshments were provided in part by Publix Supermarkets, Martin Downs Boulevard in Palm City. Ms. Jeannie Ferrara, Band Booster President 2006-2009, was also presented with a much appreciated “farewell” token. Ms. Ferrara is honored to be included in the list of those who have been elected to serve the HOMS Band children and their families, as Mr. Gilbert’s Band Booster President. Ferrara looks forward to the opportunity to support the MCHS Band programs during the 2009/2010 school year, and will remain the HOMS Chorus Publicity Director. Our special thanks to all the servers for the evening: Julie McKinney, Debby Brackett, Donna Vojcsik, Dawn Hatton, and emcee’s Kristina Hester and Helen Harvey…..and so many others that helped make the evening possible. We could not complete such a wonderful year without extending another "Thank you!" to the over 194 youth and adult volunteers that helped make this such a successful year for the Bands. Hidden Oaks Middle School volunteers have graciously given over 2, 500 hours of their time just this past School year to support Mr. Gilbert and his efforts. Our special thanks to: Kristina Hester - Outstanding Booster Vice President Karen Kusel - Outstanding Uniform Coordinator Donna Vojcsik - Outstanding Auction Chair Kerin Seo – Outstanding Breakfast/Food Coordinator Brent McAhren - Outstanding Drum Line Coach Debra Schneider - Outstanding Chaperone Coordinator Dorothy Hyland – Outstanding Co-Chaperone Coordinator Bob Brackett - Outstanding Materials Manager Susan Parisi - Outstanding HOMS Staff Cameron Holley - Outstanding High School Volunteer The Symphonic Band will perform for the last time this year, at the 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 5, 2009. HOMS Brings Home Gold!! On Friday, April 24, 2009, the Hidden Oaks Middle School Symphonic Band and Jazz Band Ambassadors, under the direction of Allen Gilbert, participated in the 2008 Spring Heritage Festival at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida. The event is held annually, and is sponsored by Heritage Festivals a division of World Strides, for more information about the festivals, please see: http://www.heritagefestivals.com/heritagefest/main/default.asp. Both Programs were awarded the coveted “Gold” for the superior score in their division. This year, we are also very proud of the Symphonic Band for being afforded the rare invitation to possibly compete in the Heritage Festivals’ exciting partnership with Field Studies, a unique performing organization that has been providing students with the chance to perform in Carnegie Hall since 1991. This partnership will now allow groups traveling with Heritage Festivals the opportunity to audition to perform at this celebrated venue. We are proud to announce that the Hidden Oaks Middle School Symphonic Band is now eligible to participate in this Elite Performance Series that combines the Festival at Carnegie Hall with the Festival of Gold Series, a long-standing and successful Heritage Festivals elite opportunity. Participation in the Elite Performance Series is available to students who have attended a regular Heritage festival and achieved a Gold or Superior rating, or by audition. These prestigious festivals are designed to offer talented ensembles the chance to celebrate musical artistry in some of the premier performance venues across the nation This year's festival was an international event, with over 15 different bands, orchestras, choirs and ensembles competing from several different states across the country. All of the members and parents of the Hidden Oaks Middle School Band programs would also like to extend their sincere appreciation for the students, Band Director and parents of the Valencia Community College Performing Arts Department for their assistance and hospitality. Heritage Festivals was established in 1980 by a group of music educators and educational tour professionals who believed that bands, choirs, and orchestras deserved new performing opportunities. Thus began a 27-year partnership with music educators that continues to grow in strength and responsiveness as they help them achieve new standards of excellence in music performance. Today that tradition of excellence remains unmatched, and inspired our students to strive for excellence and watch their confidence and self esteem grow as we had taken them on the music education experience of a lifetime (taken in part from the Heritage Festival Web Site). Students and parents may obtain the group photos as a momento of this event by contacting the event photographer, Jolesch Photography at www.jolesch.com {1.800.833.6769} WE WILL HAVE ORDER FORMS AT THE BAND PARENT MEETING. The Hidden Oaks Middle School Band Boosters cannot thank the students, parents, faculty and Administration enough for their support of wonderful programs such as these. We are very proud of our students, and very grateful for Mr. Gilbert's dedication and devotion, yet as even the Heritage Festival staff noted, successful programs such as these only happen with the support of parents. Our sincere appreciation to: Mr. and Mrs. Brackett, Mrs. Ferrara, Mrs. Hester, Mrs. Kusel, Mrs. Kenney, Mrs. Nealy, Mrs. Kalil (who helped us on Saturday), and Mrs. Haase, we are deeply indebted to you, as we could not have done this without you. 05/05/09 Jazz Band Performs at PCE, Citrus Grove, and CLE 05/12/09 Jazz Band Performs at BCE and Pinewood Elementary 05/18/09 Beginning Band Concert/Awards 7:00 p.m. Cafeteria (refreshments needed) 05/20/09 End of Year Concerts 7:00 p.m. HOMS Gym (refreshments needed) 06/05/09 8th Grade Awards/Promotion 10:00 a.m. Gym • Nominations for 2009/2010 Chair positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Chaperone Coordinator, Jazz Band Coordinator, and “Room Parents” – incoming 6th Grade parents welcome. A parting note from your Band Booster President…………”It truly has been my honor and pleasure to serve the students of Hidden Oaks Middle School for the past three years. As the parent of two Band students (and a Chorus student), I understand that children that participate in music programs are exceptional, and appreciate the parental involvement that is necessary to produce well-rounded students, and superior music programs. I have to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to each and every parent of a Band student at Hidden Oaks Middle School. Finally, my real gratitude lies in the social, emotional and lifelong relationships founded in music programs such as we have been blessed with here at Hidden Oaks Middle School. I know that students and parents alike, will cherish the intangible and invaluable life-lessons taught to each child participating in music. I will always hold dear that these programs are priceless and are the substance of wonderful memories. Just as the Director of the Heritage Festival and Orlando shared with me in 2008....."it is not necessarily the talent of the students, or the dedication of the Band Director, but in all of our experience, it has been the involvement of the parents that makes the difference!!" Robert Roadman, and his staff and students from MCHS for their visit and clinical assistance – the students really enjoyed the attention, and we are sure that it will make our 8th graders feel much more comfortable with the transition! Congratulations in store for all of the Students in Jazz, Concert and Symphonic Bands. Each Hidden Oaks Middle School Music Performance Assessment resulted in an overall "Superior" (an A+). Please consider showing your appreciation to all of the of the School Principals, Music Directors, District Superintendants, students and their families for the effort that they put forth in ensuring these programs are available to our children in our public school system. The students that participate in these Programs are truly the "brightest and the best" that each school has to offer. We find comfort in knowing that many of the students that have participated in this year’s assessments will go on to high school, colleges and eventually become leaders in our communities with the skills afforded them in such events. The children that have worked this hard WILL BECOME OUR FUTURE! It does not look so bleak....... Symphonic performs at Graduation Ceremonies - 6/05/09 A Parting Note from your Band Booster President: It truly has been my honor and pleasure to serve the students of Hidden Oaks Middle School for the past three years. Just as the Director of the Heritage Festival and Orlando shared with me in 2008....."it is not necessarily the talent of the students, or the dedication of the Band Director, but in all of our experience, it has been the involvement of the parents that makes the difference!!" Band News Feb. 17 -20, 2009
FEBRUARY 17-20 BAND NEWS SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA – HOMS Band students excelled at Solo & Ensemble last weekend at SFHS. There were 47 events entered with 34 earning Superior ratings (I), 9 earning Excellent ratings (II), 1 Good (III), and 3 DNA’s. Several students performed even though they were ill, and one in particular, Reese Triana deserves a gold medal. Reese has been very ill and missed the entire week before and after MPA. He somehow found enough energy and will power to drag himself to SFHS to perform. That was dedication and sacrifice. His solo was rated Good (III), but if the evaluator only knew the entire story, he certainly would have earned a Superior. Here are the results of the other events in the order that they performed: 1) Anthony Ferrara & Gregory Kusel Drum Duet – (Sup), Angela Benson Drum Solo Drum Solo – (Sup), Luke Hyland Trumpet Solo – (Sup), Winona Brackett Trumpet Solo – (Sup), Travis Burnam Trumpet Solo – (Ex), Hunter Hicks Tuba Solo – (Sup), Brett Largent Tuba Solo – (Ex), Taylor Schneider Trumpet Solo – (Ex), David Moss Tenor Solo – (Ex), Shannon O’Brien Trumpet Solo – (Ex), Jenna Gallas Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Raviteja Alla Trumpet Solo – (Sup), Daniel Brackett Trombone Solo- (Sup), Molly Bradfield Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Tessa Shurr Flute Solo (Sup), Alex Skoblicki Flute Solo – (Sup), Zoe Kayton Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Javier Funes Alto Solo – (Sup), Clifton Holden Tuba Solo – (Sup), Matthew Ridley Tenor Solo – (Sup), Ilana Berghash Flute Solo – (Sup), Ian Anase Trumpet Solo (Sup), Karisa McKinney Flute Solo – (Sup), Max Vojcsik Tenor Solo – (Sup), Lauren Peart Clarinet Solo (Ex), Shannon Mikaela Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Alexis Campbell Flute Solo – (Sup), Gregory Kusel Snare Solo- (Sup), Kimberly McVeigh Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Anthony Ferrara Snare Solo – (Sup), Gregory Kusel Mallet Solo – (Sup), Michael Werder Bass Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Chloe McKillop Clarinet Solo – (Sup), Bennett Pepple Snare Solo (Ex), Max Vojcsik Alto Solo – (Sup), Zack Garland Alto Solo – (Sup), and Andrew Lan Bassoon Solo – (Ex). Because of illness, there were 2 DNA’s, Ashley Schiffman, Alto solo, and Priscilla Franklin, Flute Solo. One student could not attend because of a prior commitment. I thank all of these students (I hope that I didn’t leave out anyone) for their efforts, dedication, and time. Most of the solos and ensembles could not have been performed without accompaniment, so I also greatly thank Debbie Cooper, Donna Vojcsik, and Janice Little for their assistance as accompanists. SYMPHONIC BAND – Preparations for MPA on 3/3/09 continue for all Symphonic Band students. **********PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PREPARATIONS FOR MPA CAN’T BE DONE AT SCHOOL!!!!!!******** STUDENTS MUST ALSO PRACTICE AT HOME!!!!!!
